To replace one or more missing teeth, dental implants in Longueuil are gaining in popularity, and for good reason. The benefits of dental implants are numerous and it is a treatment of choice to improve quality of life. At the Clinique Dentaire Saint-Charles, our implantology team provides unparalleled complete service that allows our clients to regain a healthy and radiant smile.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant replaces the root of the tooth. It is a small cylinder of biocompatible titanium – a non-allergenic material tolerated by the body – that acts as an anchor, a solid support from which we can attach a replacement tooth.
The placement of a dental implant is painless. In the clinic, usually under local anesthesia, the dentist performs microsurgery, which consists of screwing an implant into the jawbone, below the gumline. During the healing period, the implant fuses perfectly with the bone, forming a stable and secure base into which we insert a tiny abutment that acts as a carrier for the replacement tooth. After a short healing period, a replacement tooth can be attached to the implant.
Prostheses on Implants
After having successively lost several of your teeth, you would like to regain your old smile? Our experienced implantology and denturology teams regularly install prostheses on implants, a technique that restores a natural-looking smile while ensuring maximum comfort.
Implant-supported prosthetics consist of the attachment of a series of artificial teeth, representing a complete dental arch, to a retention bar screwed to a number of titanium abutments. So-called "traditional" techniques generally take more than six abutments. On the other hand, some more current techniques require less, which has the direct consequence of reducing the cost of the prosthesis: the most recent technique, called "all-on-4", requires only four, but others require only two. Interesting fact: the placement of the four implants and the installation of the temporary prosthesis are done in a single appointment!
For the installation, the dental surgeon must perform an operation under local anaesthesia, which is virtually painless for the patient. During the surgical procedure, we insert the dental implant into the jawbone. The implant made of titanium is completely biocompatible and becomes the root of the tooth. In some cases, when the jawbones have atrophied due to the prolonged absence of teeth in the arch, bone grafting may be necessary. However, the all-on-4 technique can get around the problem by positioning the posterior implants at a certain angle, thus avoiding areas of lower bone density.
Following the operation, a temporary prosthesis is fitted to speed up the healing process and is designed to exert very little pressure on the oral tissues. Only when the abutments have fully adhered to the bone tissue, a process that can take a few weeks, will the permanent dentition be installed.
Very similar to natural teeth, dental implants have several advantages when replacing missing teeth. No more discomfort! The bone structure of the jaw is preserved and chewing or speech problems are a thing of the past.
Because the tooth or denture is securely attached, you don't need to remove it before going to sleep or to clean it after a meal. Maintenance is, therefore, the same as that required for natural teeth: regular brushing, daily flossing, annual check-up at the dentist.
In past years, the treatments that could be applied to replace missing teeth were fixed bridges, removable partial dentures or dentures. Nowadays, it is possible to completely and permanently eliminate the usual inconveniences of these traditional prostheses.
Take bridges, for example. To be able to install these fixed dentures, the dentist must trim the natural teeth that are placed on either side of the edentulous space, whereas with dental implants, healthy teeth are preserved. As for removable dentures, dentures and partials, instability (the famous falling denture!), as well as discomfort related to chewing or speaking become non-existent. Dental implants allow you to regain the comfort of natural teeth.
